themes

Over the past few years, two major trends have emerged. In the next several years and even decades, they will determine the direction and the speed of the transformation of industrial production and service sectors.

The first trend is related to the development and implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies. This, first of all, applies to the digital transformation of individual businesses, industries, and entire supply chains. Smart production, to a large degree, is determined by its agility, i.e., flexibility, high susceptibility to changing conditions, advanced technological competencies for finding optimal solutions, and swift upgrades. At a practical level, agility capabilities are becoming available thanks to the development of hybrid technologies which merge natural and artificial intelligence.

The second trend is associated with accelerating global climate change caused by anthropogenic factors. Producers and consumers are faced with a new reality that requires a restructuring of the global economic system and culture. The algorithm “received – produced – used – discarded” must be quickly changed to “received – produced – used – recycled”. If the current generation fails in this task, the next generations will have to invest much more resources to prevent ecological collapse and to maintain a non-toxic habitat.

Technological challenges
and opportunities

2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the term Industry 4.0 (“smart” factory technology) and the beginning of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Artificial intelligence, robotisation, the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, 3D technologies, virtual and augmented reality are becoming a part of our daily existence before our very eyes. Unlike previous industrial revolutions, 4.0 is changing not only production technologies, but also socio-economic relations. The introduction of artificial intelligence and digitalisation of industry changes the role and place of the individual in it and the entire structure of society.

Although the implementation of “4.0 Technologies” in various industries and countries is not happening at the same speed, according to the forecasts of the World Economic Forum, most of the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution will become everyday reality by 2027. According to the forecast of the McKinsey, by 2025 the cumulative economic effect from the introduction of the industrial Internet alone will amount to 11 trillion dollars a year. This means that those companies that take an active part in the Fourth Industrial Revolution today will very quickly recoup their investments and gain tangible competitive advantages.

Currently, many enterprises and industries in Russia and Eurasian Economic Community are going through the final stages of the Third Industrial Revolution. This involves the development and integration of information and communication technologies, automation and robotisation of production processes, infrastructure modernisation, etc.

Despite the specifics of various industries and the levels of penetration of 4.0 technologies, almost all industrial enterprises are faced with common questions, the answers to which have yet to be formed.

Climate challenges
and opportunities

With the global climate change action, the net-zero and environmental footprint commitments are becoming a major trend across all industries. This trend is driven by the greenhouse gas emitting countries, growing demand for non-financial reporting disclosures, and shrinking opportunities to raise finance for carbon-intensive projects. Decarbonisation regulation is evolving in parallel with investor and public pressure. The number of companies publicly announcing carbon neutrality strategies is growing rapidly. However, the strategies of companies operating in carbon-rich countries such as Russia differ from those operating based in the countries focused on energy imports and the use of renewable technologies. This difference creates many challenges and unique opportunities.

What the Conference Offers

The conference will offer an opportunity for presentation and discussion of cases of industry transformation aimed at improving operational efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and creating sustainable social relations in the field of industrial production and services.

Modernisation of production is often associated with high costs. The benefits of implementing Industry 4.0 technologies are not always obvious. This is primarily true for enterprises with low level of automation, undeveloped infrastructure, and internal inertia. From this perspective, experience of companies that have managed to find effective and economically viable solutions for technological transformation and the creation of resilient business models is of particular interest.

The conference will offer an opportunity for presentation and discussion of cases of industry transformation using the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including:

Combining IIoT (Internet of Things for Industry) and big data for real-time end-to-end manufacturing process control.

Decarbonisation Technologies and Strategies.

Development of ``green`` energy and pivoting production and transport systems to renewable energy sources.

Development of self-managed autonomous industrial systems.

Introduction of innovative manufacturing technologies using composite materials and 3D printing.

The use of digital cloning technologies and the creation of computer models of equipment, factories and supply networks.

Application of machine learning for deep data analysis using neural networks.

Development of industrial applications of AR/VR (Augmented & Virtual Reality) technologies.

Evolution of cybersecurity systems for digital transformation.

New HR management practices for agile, technologically advanced and climate change committed enterprises.

Due to objective factors, the transformation of different sectors of the economy is evolving with the different speed and intensity. Some industries and companies have already accumulated vast practical experience in the creation of “smart factories” and addressing social and ethical issues triggered by the technological changes. In other industries, change is slower.

The conference offers a platform for presenting experience in creating “smart factories” and discussing the possibilities of their adaptation and scaling in various industries.

The industry is the largest consumer of energy and emitter of pollutants. It is responsible for one-third of the total direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions that are the main cause of climate change. To prevent threats to the quality of life of current and future generations, it is necessary to introduce a new paradigm of production and consumption. The transition to renewable energy sources is considered one of the key tools for the reduction of the dynamics of greenhouse gas emissions. However, the industrial application of renewable energy sources is not always effective in lowering the cost of energy and its consumption. The conference will offer a forum for cross-sectoral dialogue on the challenges and strategies for moving towards carbon neutrality.

The fourth industrial revolution radically changes the role of humans, shifting many tasks to machines and artificial intelligence. By developing smart factories today, we prepare the foundation necessary for the future. What will be the role of individuals and communities in Industry 4.0’s industrial production? What kind of challenges will professionals face? What will the professions of the future look like and what needs to be changed in today’s education system? What skills do employees need to develop to maintain their relevance with the advent of new technologies?

The conference offers opportunities for the presentation of case studies and cross-industry discussion of the role of people in smart manufacturing of the future. The dialogue between the participants will allow a deeper understanding of the challenges ahead and will help with development of social strategies for “smart” enterprises.

The creation of innovative technologies and their implementation in production is a difficult and expensive process. The experience of previous industrial revolutions illustrates that most of the inventions required help from entrepreneurs who have invested enormous resources to turn science into business. Unlike the previous stages of industrial development, the timescale for developing concepts into global business has been significantly reduced. Supporting innovation has become not only prestigious, but also profitable. Cross-industry interaction alliances allow the business to join their resources for addressing more efficiently the common for all challenges.

Business podiums organised at the conference offer an opportunity for developers and vendors to present their solutions to end-users.

What the exhibition offers

The exhibition offers a business environment in the format of a “universal cross-category marketplace” to facilitate interaction between suppliers of technologies & services with the end-users from various segments of industrial production and service sectors. Marketplace Smart Industry is a digital platform of smart technologies for cross-industry implementation.

What is the purpose of the Marketplace?

With the advent of Industry 4.0 generation technologies, the transformation of industrial production is taking place at a speed never seen before. To ensure competitive advantages and efficiency, companies are increasing efficiency and developing new competencies. In addition to using services and technologies of external providers, many companies are actively investing resources in creating their own technologies and solutions. Such developments often require significant organisational and financial costs. Many innovations implemented at individual enterprises can be scaled up across various industries. In this case, investing in technological development can not only increase the company efficiency but also bring additional dividends to its owners in the form of return on investment, creation of unique competencies and recognition.

Until recently, technological development of industrial enterprises in Russia and CIS states took place behind the scenes and was kept in the strictest confidence.
