The mining industry in Austria plays a significant role in the country’s economy and contributes to its regional added value. The extraction of mineral raw materials in Austria generates approximately 25% of the country’s GDP. Austria has notable production levels of certain raw materials such as magnesite and tungsten.
In terms of the quantity of mineral resources extracted, Austria produces about 80 million tonnes per year from both above-ground and below-ground mining activities.
Minerals in the property of the landowner account for about two-thirds of domestic production and thus make up the largest share, followed by minerals free for mining and state-owned minerals. In the field of aggregates (construction raw materials) like sand and gravel, Austria is considered self-sufficient. Regarding metals and fossil fuels, Austria depends largely on imports.
To provide some specific figures, in 2020, Austria mined 896 tons of tungsten, highlighting its importance as a mineral resource. Additionally, the mining of iron ores involved 301,801 hours of work during the same year. Furthermore, Austria produced 816,000 tons of magnesite in 2020, which further underscores the country’s mining activity.
